An urban group has raised concerns over the lack of investment in its area in the capital, Delhi.
“We do not have the resources to do the job.
This is a community-led project,” said Ramesh Kumar, who runs a community watch group in a residential area of the northern city.
“We need to be doing this in our neighbourhood,” he added.
In Delhi, where almost half of the population lives in poor areas, it is a concern that many areas have been left without a functioning government-run police station.
Some areas have had no police for years.
“If we are not able to do our job in this area, we will have to get rid of the community, which means we have to move to a new locality,” said a senior police officer.
Ramesh, who has lived in the area for more than 30 years, said he had heard rumours about how the police station in the city centre is not safe for the community.
“There is a lot of tension there,” he said.
“I think the police is scared of what might happen if we move to another locality.”
A senior police official said that while some groups in Delhi were trying to improve their areas, others were working on improving the quality of their neighbourhood watch.
“Some groups are working on their neighbourhoods, others are working in their neighbourhood,” the official said.
“It is a big task,” he told CNN.
“What if you go to a nearby neighbourhood?
You will be attacked.
The police will not come.”
Another officer said the Delhi police was not always willing to provide resources.
“They have been saying they are doing all this because they want to protect us,” the officer said.
